For myself, I want to do things I like doing that support the type of lifestyle I enjoy and that feeds me. The best forms of activism is when my natural activities provide contrast to cultural norms I really dislike, showing those around me that there is another way.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-503576549398754029.post-54739593579350041682010-12-14T16:12:43.447-08:002010-12-14T16:12:43.447-08:00Yes! Teach someone a craft or skill that will enable them to go farther towards self-reliance. We also have handmade ones that are classic, cheap glue and paint preschool masterpieces from our family. Guess which ones are cherished and which ones fill space on the tree.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-503576549398754029.post-820425447681870552010-12-06T22:32:45.902-08:002010-12-06T22:32:45.902-08:00It works from the other end of the equation too. Contrary to many common economic scripture we are not very rational beings. Whether it is the emotions that promote consumerism, or the emotions that make us feel comfortable with what we have, it is at the core of why we do what we do.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-503576549398754029.post-19457331578592976602010-12-06T15:02:51.126-08:002010-12-06T15:02:51.126-08:00Julie,

I thank about the things littering my dad's office. It is not the book I bought him last year or the pocket knife I gave him the year before. He has a 3D painting of a flamingo, a lopsided sculpture of a bear with yellow teeth and purple eyes, and a decoupage lamp covered in photos of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. The lamp is a simple target lamp that would have been sent to goodwill on their last move, but they chose instead to handel it with care - i think is had something to do with Mick.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-503576549398754029.post-54619716774500797152010-12-05T13:58:24.483-08:002010-12-05T13:58:24.483-08:00Julie, thanks for helping me re-think the things I...Julie, thanks for helping me re-think the things I buy. The images, the intent, the artistry of this person comes through so effectively, more so than had she updated her blog profile for instance. For example, the scene of her adjusting the comforter on her bed or items on her night stand--so precise, so organized and orderly, so much attention to detail. All of those qualities reflect a personal brand if you will--the skills and nature she brings to her work--but it's captured intuitively, experientially rather than stated. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-503576549398754029.post-70606396700478550052010-11-24T13:16:27.291-08:002010-11-24T13:16:27.291-08:00Funny that Bria mentioned knitting because I was g...Funny that Bria mentioned knitting because I was going to make the same comment. When I knit, i think of being "historically open." When I knit, I am connecting to very basic movements that have been made throughout history in various places and geographies. It's a very old technology that remains relevant! All of our clothing (unless woven) is a form of knit.Ninahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15197173410940486464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-503576549398754029.post-61085825966621804032010-11-20T15:48:10.140-08:002010-11-20T15:48:10.140-08:00Slow cloth makes me think of knitting. Yet, that time was enjoyable, and it felt so good to unplug, do something with my hands, and have the reward of a finished product. Everything is so new in knitting, that I'm also feeling a huge sense of pride and accomplishment for such small things. While knitting I'm still amazed how the yarn is woven and stays together, it's like magic!Bria Schlottmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15539619106993222015noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-503576549398754029.post-87079684000139003502010-11-01T18:41:54.027-07:002010-11-01T18:41:54.027-07:00I'm a big fan of Etsy, however, I often wish t...I'm a big fan of Etsy, however, I often wish they had more practical items, and items that cater to men's styles. For instance, I once purchased a really nice zippered pocket case on Etsy for my Kindle 2, but my new Kindle 3 rattles around in it and I can't find a case like it except in colors like purple and pink.ChristopherAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02839684427527255895noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-503576549398754029.post-10647982223727342442010-10-22T12:37:58.611-07:002010-10-22T12:37:58.611-07:00I've had many thoughts on the resurgence of th...I've had many thoughts on the resurgence of the DIY home sewing trend. Can you imagine a future where we personally know the people who make our clothes as we can now have relationships with the people who grow our food? When I think of peak oil and the increasing cost and difficulty of transporting goods to cities...I imagine a world that emerges out of necessity, where you take all of your old clothes to a sustainable tailor/seamstress who will re-imagine and create a new wardrobe for you.Ninahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15197173410940486464noreply@blogger.com
