Stories Disguised As Objects

The story behind an object is often where the beauty lies. Handmade objects provide a manifestation of how a person is feeling and often how they view the world around them. I love understanding artisan's process: how they get inspired, choose their materials, and execute their designs. I am fascinated by the internal thought process and the external influence.

Etsy has put together some great videos on the stories behind an artisan and their items. These stories add an incredible value to objects which mass produced items can't possibly match. Enjoy!

  1. The Yokoo video you shared reminded me so much of our discussion in SWSC about personal branding. The images, the intent, the artistry of this person comes through so effectively, more so than had she updated her blog profile for instance. For example, the scene of her adjusting the comforter on her bed or items on her night stand--so precise, so organized and orderly, so much attention to detail. All of those qualities reflect a personal brand if you will--the skills and nature she brings to her work--but it's captured intuitively, experientially rather than stated. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Julie, thanks for helping me re-think the things I buy. Do you have any stories to share about any of the shoes you've worked on?
